In Pakistan presently about 0.2 million are Thalassaemic Major patients and 5-6 thousands babies are born every year with Thalassaemia Major because carrier population is estimated to be 6-7 percent of the total population of Pakistan. Among the Thalassaemia Major patients 80% belong to poor class. As such, Thalassaemia is a cumbersome, costly, risky and a dreadful disease.
